Value of Mountain Biking

In addition to understanding the local, regional and national strategies and legislation which impact the potential for mountain biking, mountain bike advocates should understand mountain biking’s impacts on society and the environment. Countless studies have been produced during the past several decades analysing the impact of mountain bike tires on trails, on the health benefits of mountain biking, and on the economic impact mountain biking has on local and regional communities. These impacts should be understood to better counter negative narratives of mountain biking and to provide a more constructive image of our activity.

Mountain biking should also be considered in the broader context of cycling and recreation. Mountain biking can have considerable impact on local and regional mobility by promoting cycling culture, and can encourage physical activity among youth and disadvantaged communities. Other trail users or outdoor recreation enthusiasts can be allies to our cause when we promote access to nature areas and advocate for sustainable and accessible trails.

The importance of having basic knowledge and understanding of trail sustainability can not be overstated. Trail planning, design and construction has a major impact on a trail’s ecological, social and economic sustainability. IMBA Europe has extensive resources on this topic developed in the DIRTT project.
