Trail Building School Águeda Portugal

Trail experts Mark McClure and Gary Hampson will deliver a IMBA Trail Building School iin Águeda, Portugal, 1st and 2nd of April with the assistance of the Municipality of Águeda. 

The 2 day course teaches IMBA's philosophies and trains people on how to build and maintain sustainable mountain bike trails. This specific course will focus on hand built trail building techniques. Participants can expect a morning presentation, followed by an afternoon and full day of field work.

Practical training - Pista de Downhill do Ventoso, Prestimo 

General outline of the classroom presentation:

  • Introduction to IMBA
  • Trail building theory
  • Essential elements of sustainable trails
  • Designing a trail
  • Constructing the trail
  • Rerouting and reclaiming trails

Who is it suitable for?

  • Trail users (bike, pedestrian, equestrian, etc.)
  • Amateur or Professional trail builders
  • People interested in or tasked with trail design, building and maintenance, such as land
  • Managers, forest workers or resort employees.
  • Anyone who would like to understand the elements of trail sustainability
  • Students in University (studying topics such as urban planning, recreation, natural resources,economic development, etc.)

Example itinerary for the course: 

Day One

  • Trail building classroom instruction (9:00 – 12:00)
  • Lunch (12:00 – 13:00)
  • Trailwork in the field (13:00 – 17:00)

Day Two

  • Trail work in the field (9:00 – 12:00)
  • Lunch (12:00 – 13:00)
  • Trail work in the field (13:00 – 17:00)

Refreshments will be provided during the first day, however participants will need to arrange food, overnight accommodation and breakfast (if necessary).

What will I need?

We advise participants to bring along a pen and notepad, outdoor work clothing and suitable working footwear. Trail building tools will be provided but you're welcome to bring your own. 

Ticket Price € 100  To ensure your attendance, we recommend booking in advance. Payments can be made in cash on the day, or via bank transfer. To book your place or to pay in advance please contact gary.hampson@dirtfactory.org Participants will receive a certificate upon completion of the course. 

The school also ties in with the annual European IMBA summit, which will be held the following weekend.
