SEE Project – Latest report into Leadership and Environmental Training in Outdoor Sports Federations.
The SEE Project – Sustainability and Environmental Education in Outdoor Sports – is a transnational Erasmus project that IMBA Europe has been involved with since late 2019. The project consortium consists of sporting organisations, environmental NGO’s and Universities from across Europe. The goal of the SEE project is to promote environmental education in outdoor sports, with the end goal of producing an educational toolkit that can be used by outdoor sports trainers and providers. Reports into the perceived impacts of outdoor sports in Protected Areas and the broader sustainability issues of OS have highlighted the areas in which outdoor sports need/can improve. As an organisation, there have been many lessons learnt into how we can better approach the topic of sustainability. Rather than considering sustainability in only the environmental context, we need to consider all 4 pillars of sustainability when thinking about mountain biking and the future of the sport.
In the latest report – BeActive…BeOutdoors… BeEducated… – the project partners identified current good practices from within the outdoor sporting sector. The partners to the project agreed on a list of 26 sports and activities that could be encompassed within the ENOS definition of outdoor sports. The next step was to investigate each of these sports in their own country to gather information on their leaders’, guides’, or instructors’ training programmes. Nine partner countries were involved in looking for information on the number of courses available, and whether environmental education was offered in their leadership training programmes.
